Škoda Superb Celebrates 25 Years of Space, Comfort and Innovation
It’s hard to believe that the modern Škoda Superb is now 25 years old.
First unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 11 September 2001, the Superb has gone on to become one of Škoda’s most recognisable models, winning over drivers with a combination of exceptional space, comfort, practicality and value.
And it certainly hasn’t stood still. Across four generations, nearly 1.8 million Superbs have now been delivered to customers around the world.
The Superb name itself actually goes back much further. Škoda first used it in 1934, with various Superb models produced until 1949. More than half a century later, the famous name returned for an entirely new generation of car.
That first modern Superb quickly established a reputation for remarkable passenger space – particularly in the rear – together with generous equipment levels and a wide choice of engines.
The second generation arrived in 2008 and introduced the clever TwinDoor rear-opening system, while the range also expanded to include the hugely practical Superb Estate and four-wheel-drive models.
Generation three followed in 2015, bringing significant advances in connectivity, driver assistance and design. Then, in 2019, another milestone arrived when the Superb became the first production Škoda to be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Today's fourth-generation Superb continues that evolution.
Available in both hatch and estate forms, the latest model combines the qualities that have made the Superb so popular with modern technology, impressive levels of comfort and the broadest choice of powertrains in its history. Depending on model, customers can choose from petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.
Inside, innovations such as Škoda Smart Dials sit alongside the space and everyday usability for which the Superb has become renowned.
Perhaps that's the secret of its longevity. The Superb has changed enormously over 25 years, but the fundamentals haven't: lots of room, excellent comfort and clever, practical thinking.
