Škoda Enyaq Takes on an Extraordinary Journey to the Cradle of Humankind
Škoda has once again showcased the impressive real-world capability of its all-electric Enyaq, embarking on an extraordinary journey to one of the most remote and historically significant locations on Earth. A standard production Enyaq Coupé vRS was driven deep into the Great Rift Valley in northern Kenya—widely regarded as the “Cradle of Humankind”—by drivers from BBC Top Gear and BBC Earth.
This remarkable region, centred around Lake Turkana, holds one of the most important records of early human evolution. With fossil evidence spanning millions of years, it provides scientists with a unique window into our origins. During the expedition, the team visited the renowned Turkana Basin Institute, founded by Dr Richard Leakey, where ongoing research continues to uncover the story of human development.
The journey also took in some of Kenya’s most breathtaking landscapes, including the oasis of Eliye Springs, the striking Waddach Pyramids, and the vast Natong’obong sand dunes. Along the way, the team experienced local culture firsthand, visiting traditional Turkana communities and travelling through remote towns such as Kalokol and Lodwar.
Despite the extreme environment—with temperatures approaching 40°C and terrain ranging from tarmac to sand dunes—the Enyaq Coupé vRS performed flawlessly. With its dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 340 PS and an 84 kWh battery, the vehicle covered over 300 miles. Aside from all-terrain tyres, the car remained entirely standard, highlighting its durability and versatility.
Even in an area with limited charging infrastructure, the Enyaq proved its practicality. Using a portable adaptor and a three-phase power supply, the vehicle was able to recharge effectively, demonstrating how electric driving can extend far beyond traditional networks.
This unique expedition draws a powerful connection between the evolution of humankind and the evolution of mobility. As the Enyaq travelled past sites where some of the earliest human tools were discovered, it symbolised how innovation continues to shape our future.
For us at Lightcliffe Škoda, it’s another inspiring example of how electric vehicles like the Enyaq are not only ready for everyday life—but also capable of extraordinary adventure.
